Sho Nirbhor (Self-reliance)
Aim: To promote self-reliance among Bangladeshi-origin women in Bradford through environmental activities.
The Sho Nirbhor programme started in November 2004, building on the success of the Gardening for Health programme. Despite a rocky launch in respect of gathering the funding resources and with the original programme worker taking maternity leave from early February 2005, the programme is now gathering momentum with gardening sessions and English as a Second Language (ESOL) classes which are being regularly attended. Environmental taster sessions have begun and are delivered in partnership with Bradford Environmental Education Services (BEES). A programme of environmental visits promotes Walking for Health, and leading to a residential in the Dales in conjunction with the MOSAIC Project and the Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust. The programme also enjoys strong links with the Women's Environmental Network Local Food Team. During 2005 the programme was the subject of research by University of Bradford student Cathy Knamiller who made some very pertinent recommendations for the programme.
