Home Safety
Manningham and Girlington Home Safety Scheme
Aim: To promote a safe home environment for children through safety advice and equipment.
Home safety advice and access to home safety equipment was offered at a number of community locations during regular surgeries for some years. Presentations and promotional material with clear home safety messages were developed and disseminated through meetings of mothers & toddlers and other local groups. In September 2004 the scheme was expanded to include home safety audits on referrals from Sure Start Manningham, during which safety equipment was made available and recommendations were made to clients on improving child safety in their homes.
During 2004/2005 the programme distributed £8,509 worth of equipment (931 items) to 329 clients (nearly triple the number in 2003/2004). The average client bought 3 items at subsidised rates paying £10.80 for £25.80 worth of home safety equipment. That represented a discount of 58%, or just over a third of average retail prices. £3,550 was recycled back into the equipment fund.
Each client received home safety awareness advice and safety tips. Surgeries were regularly held at Manningham Clinic and Carlisle Business Centre, with additional talks at the Milan Centre, Frontline, Girlington Community Centre, Kensington Street Clinic, Farcliffe Children's Centre, and Sure Start parent meetings and events. Families were also able to make enquiries regarding smoke alarms and smoke detectors, and were referred to the Fire Brigade.
