Heaton Primary School

Heaton Primary - with their own woodland area on the school grounds, as well as a dedicated Forest Schools worker on their staff, an ideal place for children to learn outside

Heaton Primary are lucky enough to have a wonderful wooded area on their schools grounds which they are looking to develop with the help of a dedicated Forest Schools worker on their staff. This woodland is an excellent resource for use by their pupils and also other schools in the area. Habitat Heroes had been involved originally in working with the children to plant native woodland wildflowers and to develop a ‘Mini-beast trail’, creating a whole variety of habitats for creepy-crawlies and a fascinating area for the children to learn about these communities.

In September 2010 the school re-joined the Habitat Heroes programme as part of a project funded by the Heaton and Manningham wards. During the course of this project, Habitat Heroes was helping Heaton and the co-located Chellow Heights special school to work together more closely using their shared grounds. This included running a weekly gardening group with children from both sites, planting daffodil bulbs, a willow tunnel and sensory plants. Children also planted trees around the edge of a another field belonging to the school.
