Green Lane Primary School

Green Lane Primary School - where over 2 days Habitat Heroes had 400 children planting trees!

All 600 children at Green Lane have been involved in a variety of sessions and activities since before the 2008 summer holidays. In the earliest sessions at Green Lane the children conducted an audit of their school grounds for wildlife value and to think about how we could make it a more pleasant environment for themselves and local wildlife. Since then we have planted hundreds of wildlife friendly plants and bulbs – including one large section across the front of the school, which should be a riot of colour come spring! The school wildlife garden has had a much needed makeover and now attracts lots of feathered visitors, spotted by the children in a their recent Big Schools Birdwatch, during which they also made some rather nice Bird boxes. Since November every child in the school has planted a tree on the school grounds, which will over time develop into a native hedge running right around the edge of the field and into a small woodland copse in one corner…over just 2 days before Christmas there were 400 children happily planting trees at Green Lane, hard work but fun for all!

Future plans include putting in some fruit trees, building raised beds for veg growing, planting a native wildflower meadow and continuing work on the wildlife garden – including constructing a mini-beast hotel. All of these features should make the school a much nicer habitat for local wildlife and provide a valuable teaching resource for Science and Art.

Recent Developments:

Habitat heroes would like to thank Aquabirths for supplying old birthing pools which we have used as a liner for a bog garden we have created at Green Lane with the help of a team of BEES volunteers - a perfect example of reuse! Any other businesses out there who think they may have some kind of waste we could use....please get in touch!
