Chellow Dean and Pitty Beck

The Urban Design Team (UDT) were approached to work alongside the BMDC Drainage Department to help deliver and create two Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems as part of a European approach to urban drainage.

The projects consisted of four settling ponds, two with reed bed systems that aim to improve the quality of water whilst not disrupting water levels within the chosen watercourses. The UDT set up community steering groups for the two sites which helped to convey the views of the local community and assisted in identifying particular landscape improvements.

Completed ponds at Pitty BeckCompleted ponds at Pitty BeckThe partnerships between the UDT, BMDC and the steering groups have brought about lots of community involvement throughout the duration of the projects including planting days with local schools, invasive plant species removal with BEES (Bradford Environmental Education Services), and future school trips to undertake pond dipping and other activities.

By the summer of 2006 all the access paths, signage and other improvements were complete allowing both sites to become both a local and regional resource.
