Derby Road Allotments

Thornbury Garden and Allotment Association asked for help with an allotment site at Derby Road. A large part of the allotments was unused.

Derby Rd. BEFOREDerby Rd. BEFOREOvergrown vegetation created too many hiding places which attracted people to dump rubbish there, and created a feeling of being unsafe. Allotment holders were not keen to be near these areas and new allotment holders refused to hire these unused plots. In addition, the water supply was leaking and a drainage problem had developed in the lowest part of the site.

UDT produced a plan of works for clearance and reinstatement of the unused allotments to make them safe and attractive for new growers. The plan not only solved the above problems, but enhanced the allotments by adding seating areas where allotment’s holders are able to meet and socialise. Derby Rd. AFTERDerby Rd. AFTERWater from a new drain leads into an area left for wild life and a small corner allotment has also been left wild.

A new grass path has been created so allotment holders can visit their neighbours without having to walk along Derby Road. Work was implemented by a combination of a landscape contractor and CUD trainees. As soon as works were finished and the growing season had started, many of the reclaimed allotment became occupied by new allotment holders.
