Growing with a Pro-Active Approach to Health

Aim:

To promote healthy lifestyles to people from high risk* groups by improving their physical health and mental well-being.

*those in sheltered housing, those fleeing violence, sex workers, people suffering the effects of substance misuse, those with learning difficulties, and/or with long term illnesses.

PATH does this through:

  • Teaching people to grow and cook & eat (using healthy recipes) their own fruit and vegetables.
  • Reducing barriers to access to fresh affordable fruit and vegetables.
  • Increasing outdoor gentle, regular, exercise and as a result, physical health.
  • Increase access to mutually beneficial social action e.g. volunteering opportunities.

Why is this important?

  • For some participants this is an opportunity for social interaction
  • By taking part in activities participants feel a sense of purpose and productivity, the routine and structure is also similar to that of a work environment.
  • Engagement in meaningful work increases self-confidence, self-esteem and well-being which can often be a key turning point for people in the ‘high-risk’ group.
