School Gardening and Environmental Clubs
Aim: To encourage and assist a healthy lifestyle through food growing, gardening, good diet and related activities.
Since the beginning, BCEP has worked with schoolchildren of all ages - from nursery up to secondary, right across Bradford District. Gardening and growing food connects children with where their food comes from, gives them responsibility, self esteem and a sense of achievement. They may work on just one or two metres square - or have a huge area for growing. The activities may be part of the curriculum, at lunchtimes or after school. Parents and other volunteers can be very useful in developing these areas.
BCEP co-ordinated and part delivered five out-of-school-hours gardening and environmental clubs in partnership with Bradford City Farm Association and BEES. 180 pupils attended the clubs, which were held weekly during term time. Newhall, Wycliffe, Brakenhill, Lowerfields, St. John's and Thornton Primary Schools have all had growing areas developed over previous years, and this programme used these valuable resources to deliver engaging, practical environmental sessions. All schools had success in the WYOG show, with Wycliffe Primary picking up the trophy for best children’s exhibit.
