Plant Cultures
Aim: To collect stories and images relating to a list of South Asian plants.
Co-ordinated by the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and commissioned in Bradford through the SPICE project, Plant Cultures is a national programme that has collected stories and images relating to a list of South Asian plants. The stories and images are being housed on a website (www.plantcultures.org.uk) and act as a terrific resource, if not a national treasure in themselves. BCEP has been very proud to be associated with this programme and we were also delighted to be the first commissioned organisation to complete and deliver the required local stories and pictures.
Activities related to the programme have included:- the development of promotional materials including a large photographic display which has been in residence at Kew Gardens; stalls at the Mela and the International Market; teacher workshops; exhibitions at Bradford Central Library and Cartwright Hall Gallery. Members of BCEP’s Asian Women’s Gardening Groups were also invited to visit Kew Gardens which created great excitement. Bradford City Farm were able to support the project by growing many of the plants in the MHLI polytunnel. The programme courted a good deal of media attention and has featured several times on Bradford Community Broadcasting Radio, the Telegraph & Argus, the Women’s Environmental Network newsletter, Asian Eye and the Times Educational Supplement.
