E Schools

Aim: To create environmental resources on school grounds that will assist delivery of national curriculum through engagement with the environment and associated issues.

This two-year programme, started in April 2004, and was the epitome of partnership working. Led by BCEP, E-Schools was delivered with Bradford Environmental Education Service (BEES), Bradford Council's Environmental Education Officer, Crag Rats (issues-based theatre company), Bradford Alhambra's Twisting Yarn theatre group, Leeds Development Education Centre (LDEC), eight local schools and external evaluators Hayton Associates.

Following extensive consultation with pupils, teachers, governors and the delivery partners, the team identified the need to develop outdoor classrooms to increase environmental education, raise awareness of issues and encourage community involvement. Outdoor classrooms supported the delivery of the national curriculum and extended learning opportunities as well as improved the school environment.

Some of the initiatives included fruit orchards, food growing areas, wildflower meadows, ponds, nature trails, living willow structures, adventurous play areas, trim-trails, quiet seating and wildlife habitats.

Installation of physical works was completed by Christmas 2005. The final phase of the programme involved the production of a comprehensive resource package. This helped teachers to make the greatest use of the new resources and sustain their value.
