Out whatever the weather!

The cold weather didn’t stop children at a local school getting out to their allotment last week.

A group of them were preparing for the Big School’s Bird Watch by making bird feeders - pushing sunflower seeds into apples and stringing peanuts onto wire to hang from trees and shrubs. Whilst they were there, the children spotted pigeons and magpies in the trees. They are hoping that the tasty morsels they have left will encourage more birds to visit their allotment, particularly when they go out with binoculars next week.

The class go out to the allotment in groups and are working very hard together to get their raised beds ready for planting. They have already planted some garlic and are looking forward to using it in cook and eats. One young girl asked: “Ooh! do you think we could make garlic bread when it grows, I love garlic bread!”.

There is plenty of variety in the tasks they undertake. After a tool safety talk the children took it in turns to use loppers to cut the small branches off a large branch that had fallen.  The chopped-up branch is going to make a great mini beast haven and wildlife habitat for bigger animals like hedgehogs – who they hope will eat the slugs before the slugs discover the vegetables they are growing!
