Parkland Primary

Parkland Primary worked with Habitat Heroes over 2009-10 as part of the Bradford North project. Another school with plenty of space available to them but few features on their site, Parkland Primary suggested lots of improvements including raised beds, a new hedge along the front of the school, tonnes of bulb planting, opening up a courtyard area to allow seating to be installed, a bog garden, bird feeders and hides, seating circles and sensory planting.

The story so far...

August 2009 - This month a team of volunteers from the YBS took part in a very productive day and constructed raised beds, ready for planting.

October 2009 - Children took part in a bulb planting session this month, learning about the different reproductive and growth methods of plants. An Eco-schools training session was also delivered which should yield highly positive results.

November 2009 - The pupils took part in another successfull bulb planting session this month.

January 2010 - This month the pupils played a key part in the Big Schools Birdwatch by taking part in bird watch sessions and recording their observations.

February 2010 - Children took part in hedge planting sessions this month, allowing them to experience the growth and use of structural planting techniques.

March 2010 - Several larger trees were planted by pupils and Habitat Heroes this month. This, along with more hedge planting will greatly increase the variety of plants on the school site.

April 2010 - Children had great fun during a minibeast session this month, hunting and identifying various minibeasts lurking around the site. A meeting also took place in order to schedule further work.

June 2010 - This month the neighbourhood forum were invited to the school grounds on a guided walk, to see the birlliant progress being made, by pupils and staff.

Since working  with Habitat Heroes the school have continued the development of their grounds with the help of the volunteer contacts they have made. A new bog garden has been created, as has a set of raised beds - fully planted and thriving. A willow tunnel has also been created with the help of Habitat Heroes.
