Playing in the Snow - 6th February 2009
WASPS have been working with Thornton Children’s Centre and Thornton Primary since the beginning of January 2009. There are 12 children aged 4 to 5 who have been coming to the woods once a week for an hour at a time. The weather has been mixed with some days being rainy and damp, others rather frosty, but that hasn’t stopped us – we even made it out in the snow.
The Children’s Centre managed to find funding to buy a few waterproof jackets and trousers so all the children were well suited and booted. Since only a few children were able to make it in to school in the snow, only 6 children came out with us. But those 6 children had an amazing time. We made snow angels, snow men and had a continuous snowball fight going on. Luckily the WASPS staff were well kitted out in waterproofs as it really excited the children to be able to ‘decorate’ the staff in snow! We also tracked animals and amazingly found a bear in the woods that was very noisy and just set everyone off roaring all the time.
Each of the 6 children that participated were amazed, excited and captivated by the snow, so much so that they didn’t want to leave. It goes to show that children really can play out whatever the weather
