Green Lane Primary School

Green Lane primary was one of the first Habitat Heroes schools, and later joined the Bradford North project to continue working with us.
All 600 children at Green Lane have been involved in a variety of sessions and activities since before the 2008 summer holidays. In the earliest sessions at Green Lane the children conducted an audit of their school grounds for wildlife value and to think about how we could make it a more pleasant environment for themselves and local wildlife. Since then we have planted hundreds of wildlife friendly plants and bulbs – including one large section across the front of the school, which should be a riot of colour come spring! The school wildlife garden has had a much needed makeover and now attracts lots of feathered visitors, spotted by the children in a their recent Big Schools Birdwatch, during which they also made some rather nice Bird boxes. Since November every child in the school has planted a tree on the school grounds, which will over time develop into a native hedge running right around the edge of the field and into a small woodland copse in one corner…over just 2 days before Christmas there were 400 children happily planting trees at Green Lane, hard work but fun for all!
Habitat heroes would like to thank Aquabirths for supplying old birthing pools which were used as a liner for a bog garden created at Green Lane with the help of a team of BEES volunteers - a perfect example of reuse!Children at the school have also now planted up the bog garden and a native wildflower meadow, and are benefitting from a new raised bed area in which they can grow fruit and vegetables.
Since working with Habitat Heroes, the school have continued the development of their grounds through the creation of a nature trail around the edge of the school field. They have
