What an apple-mostphere!!
BCEPs Grow Organic took part in Bradford Apple Groups highly successful 2008 Apple Day. The event took place at West Bowling Community Orchards and was attended by over 600 people, twice the number who had attended in previous years. Bradford Apple Group aims to raise awareness of English apples and apple orchards and support community orchards. The event took place on West Bowling Community Orchard.
Apple bobbing
Grow Organic supported the event (working with Bradford Environmental Education Service (BEES), other BCEP projects and interested individuals) by providing a range of activities from apple tasting, to apples for sale, apple bobbing, apple peeling competitions to apple juicing. All activities aimed to promote healthy eating, showing that fruit can be fun in addition to raising awareness of how fruit grows and enjoying the community orchard space.
Pressing apple juice
Local apples donated from gardens around Bradford via Bradford Fruit Share project were juiced using a hand apple press. A willing stream of volunteers helped prepare and chop the apples before putting them into the press for juicing. People were able to work the juicer for themselves to create fantastic fresh juice for drinking.
Over 40 varieties of apple from around England were on sale - some travelling as little as 35 miles from Ampleforth Abbey near York.
