St. Matthew's Sensory Garden
Posted by cud, August 8th, 2008
St. Matthew’s school had an underused grass area and the school required a space where the children could use all five senses.
St. Matthew's BEFOREUDT
prepared four different designs for raised flower beds where the
children could not only use all five senses but could also use the area
as a small outdoor classroom or where parents could sit and talk while
waiting for their children. Those designs were presented to children,
teachers and other workers at the school to vote for which they liked
best. The one with the most votes was then constructed on site by BCEP
trainees.
St. Matthew's AFTERThe
stimulation of the five senses was achieved by the combination of
plants and materials. Even from a distance, a palette of different
colours of leaves, blossoms and fruits is visible and changes with the
seasons.
Walking into the garden, the swish of the foliage, buzz of insect and singing of birds is heard. At the same time, the many diverse fragrances from blossoms and the essential oils of herbs can be smelt.
St. Matthew's AFTER
The more discerning visitor might possibly notice the smell of ripening
strawberries, apples or other fruit, and if in the garden at the right
time even taste them.
At any time of the year, there are various plants, wood and gravel to touch and feel the different textures.
