Balsam Bash on the Aire

BCEP and BTCV have co-operated to organise a conservation volunteers day on Thursday 24th July down at Hirst Weir on the River Aire. Responding to a request from Bradford Amateur Rowing Club (BARC), BCEP called in BTCV’s volunteers to help halt the spread on Himalayan balsam up the river. This pernicious and smothering invasive plant has colonised significant stretches of the Aire. BARC has been waging war on the invader for many years and buoyed by their success to date has decided to up the anti and launch a major assault on the balsam.

If you would like to assist in reclaiming river bank space for native flora and fauna then meet at Hirst weir (north bank, end of Coach Road) at 10.30 on Thursday 24th July. Bring along gardening glovers, long shirt and thick trousers (there are plenty of stingers around) and wellies (the balsam loves the bogs).
