Allotments Open Day 2008
Posted by groworganic, June 18th, 2008
On Wednesday, July 9th, we held our annual Open Day at the Scotchman Road allotments. Members of our on-going groups came along with their families to celebrate the harvest of their work over the past year, and local residents and children from local schools were invited as well, for taster gardening sessions and to join in the celebrations.
Music in the yurtIt was a fabulous day, with colleagues from BCEP’s FLINT, APE and WASPS programmes contributing activities, along with the Grow Organic workers and their volunteers and friends. Making go-carts from scrap, hats from environmental material, djembe drumming and German music were among the activities on offer. The yurt had it’s first outing and provided a beautiful setting for the indoor activities.
Harvesting the crops
There is an impressive array of different fruit and vegetables grown on the plots. The cook-and-eat sessions used food freshly harvested , and the children recognised the different vegetables they were eating, and remembered when they was planted.
Cook & eat
Recipes included berry dessert and omelettes made with courgettes, garlic, onions, potatoes and fresh herbs; the salads were made with a wide variety of fresh leaves and flowers.
“I loved the taste of the natural omelette – better than at home!” was one comment.
"Today was fun; it is a good ending to the sessions" summed the day up very well.
